Sunday 29 September 1996
1996 is often thought of as a year in which Mayo blew it as they held a six-point lead before Colm Coyle’s looping ball bounced over the bar to seal a spirited Meath comeback. The replay was just five minutes old when a mass brawl broke out in front of the Royals goal. Mayo’s Liam MacHale - man of the match in the drawn game - and Meath’s Coyle were sent off as the Royals went on to just about wrestle away the title.
