Anticipating a wet day in the replayed final, several Meath players went with the longest studs permissible. It turned out that the turf wasn’t the sodden marsh predicted and, taking a few practice free-kicks during the warm-up, Brian Stafford’s boots began to hurt him. During the pre-match parade he nipped off to the dressing room to change them. It worked. Stafford kicked seven points as the Royals overcame Gerry McEntee’s early sending-off.
