Eugene McKenna dominated the first half for Tyrone as they raced into the three-point lead at the break of teh All-Ireland final. When Damien O’Hagan plundered a goal at the start of the second period it seemed as if the underdogs were going to produce one of the greatest All-Ireland final shocks. When Kevin McCabe nudged the lead out to seven points it was a real possibility. However, Tyrone scored just two points for the remainder of the game as Kerry cut loose with Pat Spillane and Mike Sheehy nabbing a goal each.
