The first ever Connacht football championship match to be held outside Ireland took place when Mayo visited London at Ruislip in 1981. Captain Martin Carney scored 1-2 on a day when the Mayomen hit 19 wides in a 3-11 to 1-4 win. Mayo went on to win their first provincial title in 12 years but came up short against Kerry in a semi-final where they failed to score in the second half.
