Dermot Earley snr will go down as one of the finest Gaelic footballers never to have won an All-Ireland. The closest he came was in 1980 when he helped Roscommon to a fourth successive Connacht title and to beat Armagh in the final four. The Rossies raced into an early lead against Kerry in the final but faded, even though their long-time warrior started a move to get their only goal after 35 seconds.
