In the wake of the 1976 success, Kevin Heffernan shocked Dublin fans by stepping down as boss. An even bigger shock was the appointment of 28-year-old team captain Tony Hanahoe as manager and selector. It made little difference to the Dubs as they beat Kerry in an epic All-Ireland semi-final before beating Armagh in the final, 5-12 to 3-6. He retained the triple job the following year before Heffernan returned in 1979.
