It was first suggested in 1963 that 15 players should be acknowledged after the end of each season. In 1970, former RTE and Irish Press journalist Mick Dunne arranged that a selection panel made up of sportswriters to pick their top performers in each position. He also organised a sponsor and the selected players were rewarded with tours to the US throughout the 1970s.
