Reigning champions Down were bidding for a second Ulster and All-Ireland title in a row. There was a violent eruption when Armagh felt they should have been awarded a goal when the ball appeared to cross the line with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. The referee ignored their claims and had to scurry quickly to the dressing room to avoid the ire of supporters. Down went on to win Sam Maguire and maintain their 100 percent winning record in Croke Park finals.
