Peter McDermott had the unusual distinction of participating in his fifth All-Ireland final in four years by 1954. He played in the 1951, ’52 (draw and replay) and victorious 1954 finals and refereed the 1953 final - at a time when he was also a county board secretary. Indeed he also held the whistle in the 1956 final. McDermott, the ‘Man in the Cap’, was part of the first Meath All-Ireland winning team in 1949.
