Kerry lead the Munster final by five points with ten minutes left when Cork were awarded a penalty. After a long injury delay, Jim Aherne’s penalty trickled straight to Kerry goalkeeper ‘Danno’ Keefe. Years later the reason became clear: Kerry’s giant full-back Joe Keohane had amiably chatted to Aherne during the delay, all the time standing on the ball and forcing it into the mud, ruining the Cork man’s penalty attempt.
