World War Two was hitting the GAA hard in the pockets. Less than 10,000 were at the semi-final between Dublin and Cavan which the Dubs won with the help of Kerry-born Joe Fitzgerald. In the final they faced a Galway side who had denied Kerry a four-in-a-row. The attendance at the final was the lowest since 1932 as Dublin mounted a second-half fight-back. Tom Banks and Matt Fletcher kicked two late points to seal the win.
