Sunday 28 July 1940
Crowd numbers for football in Munster were worryingly low in 1940, with just 2,000 at the provincial final. In Leinster, however, almost 30,000 turned out to see Meath retain their Leinster title. They did it the hard way, too. A goal from Dan Douglas helped Laois to a three-point half-time lead but the Royals struck back in the second period to win by three. They went on to lose to Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final.
