In front of a poor attendance of 26,000, Kerry were overwhelming favourites against Mayo. The Connacht champions actually led at half-time 1-4 to 1-1 but could only add a single goal in the second half as Kerry powered on to win 2-8 to 2-4. Joe Barrett was captain while his team-mate Eamonn Fitzgerald was away in Los Angeles finishing fourth at the Olympic Games in the triple jump.
