Kildare became the first county to win the Sam Maguire cup when they beat Cavan in the All-Ireland final. The trophy was named after the Corkman who captained London Hibernians to All-Ireland finals in the early 20th century. He was Michael Collins’ chief intelligence officer in London. He moved back to west Cork later in life and died there in 1927 at the age of 48.
