The clash between Mayo and Sligo in the first round of the Connacht championship was abandoned after just three minutes when the crowd invaded the pitch. The referee had initially allowed a Sligo goal but reversed his decision when Mayo protested. Sligo’s George Higgins and Mickey Noone then walked off the pitch in disgust. The match was awarded to Mayo and Sligo were banned for a year.
