Cavan and Monaghan had a dramatic Ulster meeting in 1916 with objections and counter-objections flying back and forth. The two sides met again in the 1917 Ulster final, Cavan winning 3-1 to 0-2 in the Ulster final but the latter were awarded the game because the Breffni men were late on the field. In the aftermath, Cavan refused the offer of a replay and came close to severing all ties with the Ulster Council.
