From Dunmanway, Co Cork, Sam Maguire played for London in the 1900 and 1903 All-Ireland finals and captained his side in the 1901 final which was played in 1903. He worked in the British Civil Service but was secretly an Irish intelligence officer. He died in 1927 aged 47 and a trophy in his remembrance was commissioned to be awarded to the All-Ireland football champions. It was first presented to Kildare in 1928.
