Limerick had a revolutionary training regime – which included walking six miles and back for a challenge match every Sunday – and it was paying off. They were a physical side and the county already had a burgeoning rugby culture. Limerick behemoth Larry Roche accidently knocked out Dublin forward Jack Ledwidge before the Treaty county went on to claim the title by a point.
