It took until the following spring for the first All-Ireland championship to be completed. Limerick Commercials, a club formed by the drapers of the city, beat Dundalk Young Irelands 1-4 to 0-3 in front of a crowd of 3,000 in Clonskeagh. Thomas McNamara scored the winning goal after a long dribbling run while Malachy O’Brien was hailed as the first star of Gaelic football.
