The GAA spread slowly in Ulster as militant Sabbatarians often prevented GAA matches taking place on the Sabbath. Ballyconnell’s First Ulsters, the oldest club in Ulster, played their first match and were warned by constables they were breaking the Sunday Observance Act of 1695 but a justice of the peace failed to sign the summons.
